Speciation of arsenic in sulfidic waters
نویسندگان
چکیده
Formation constants for thioarsenite species have been determined in dilute solutions at 25 uC, SH2S from 10 to 10 M, SAs from 10 to 10 M, and pH 7 and 10. The principal inorganic arsenic species in anoxic aquatic systems are arsenite, As(OH)3 , and a mononuclear thioarsenite with an S/As ratio of 3 : 1. Thioarsenic species with S/As ratios of 1 : 1, 2 : 1, and 4 : 1 are lesser components in sulfidic solutions that might be encountered in natural aquatic environments. Thioarsenites dominate arsenic speciation at sulfide concentrations w 10 M at neutral pH. Conversion from neutral As(OH)3 0 to anionic thioarsenite species may regulate the transport and fate of arsenic in sulfate-reducing environments by governing sorption and mineral precipitation reactions.

Thioarsenates in geothermal waters of Yellowstone National Park: determination, preservation, and geochemical importance.
Mono-, di-, tri-, and tetrathioarsenate, as well as methylated arsenic oxy- and thioanions, were determined besides arsenite and arsenate in geothermal waters of Yellowstone National Park using anion-exchange chromatography inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Retention time match with synthetic standards, measured S:As ratios, and molecular electrospray mass spectra support the identi...
متن کاملSpeciation and Cycling of Arsenic, Cadmium, Lead and Mercury in Natural Waters
The cycling of the elements in natural waters is driven by a combination of chemical and biological processes. This paper will focus on two key features of the natural water chemistry of As, Cd, Pb and Hg, chemical speciation and mean oceanic residence time. Calculation of equilibrium speciation in solution is heavily dependent on the accuracy of both the complex stability constants used and of...
متن کاملArsenic contamination and speciation in surrounding waters of three old cinnabar mines.
The impact of arsenic pollution in waters from the surroundings of three abandoned Hg mines in Northern Spain, as well as reaching the Caudal River, was evaluated. For assessing the factors controlling arsenic release, an extensive study based on the physicochemical characterization and multivariate statistical analysis of waters upstream and downstream each mine site was performed. Waters down...
متن کاملIntrasexual competition enhances reproductive isolation between locally adapted populations
During adaptation to different habitat types, both morphological and behavioral traits can undergo divergent selection. Males often fight for status in dominance hierarchies and rank positions predict reproductive success. Ecotypes with reduced fighting abilities should have low reproductive success when migrating into habitats that harbor ecotypes with superior fighting abilities. Livebearing ...
متن کاملBioaccumulation, biotransformation and trophic transfer of arsenic in the aquatic food chain.
The occurrence, distribution, speciation, and biotransformation of arsenic in aquatic environment (marine and freshwater) have been studied extensively by several research groups during last couple of decades. However, most of those studies have been conducted in marine waters, and the results are available in a number of reviews. Speciation, bioaccumulation, and biotransformation of arsenic in...
